Our God is a Good God who loves us immeasurably. Our thinking needs to be saturated with the heart and mind of God, not the enemy’s. I’m convinced that the enemy of our souls works to convince the world – and even God’s people – that God is an angry and harsh deity. Of course, we must not take God’s judgment lightly, but His prevailing nature is not judgment; it is mercy and love for the people He created and redeemed! Let this truth sink into your heart. The Lord created Adam and Eve and then walked with them in the cool of the day. God Himself desired to fellowship with, have a relationship with, and hang out with His children! From the beginning God set up a covenant of blessing with His children that would come from an intimate relationship with Him. Of course, we know from John 3:16 that God loved us so much that He sent His own Son, Jesus, so that we, His children, could have life – and that more abundantly!
Paul talked about what it means to be children of God. As God’s children, we have received “the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father’”. (Romans 8:15 NIV) An Aramaic word for “father” “Abba” paints a picture of a young child trusting completely in his father to protect and take care of his every need. As the children of God, we can have complete, unwavering trust in our Abba – our heavenly Father – which gives us a deep-seated sense of peaceful assurance that He has everything under control.
When our children were young, Larry and I would buckle them in their car seats before we traveled anywhere. Today, we buckle in our children’s children – our Grandsugars, as we call them. The children never asked, “Now, Dad, do we have enough gas in the tank? Have you checked the tire pressure? Did you adequately map out our route and calculate the approximate arrival time at our destination?” That would be unlikely coming from a young child! Little children just climb in their seats and enjoy the journey without worrying about the technical details of travel. They naturally trust that Mon and Dad have everything under control and are perfectly capable of getting them to the anticipated destination. This is the kind of trust that our heavenly Father wants us to put in Him! He is our loving, attentive, and fully capable Father who straps us in our car seats and drives safely with accurate directions. We can trust Him, relax, and enjoy the journey.
