Foundation of Intimacy with God

Knowing God, His nature and His Word (which is His will) produces faith and boldness within us. The foundation of powerful effective prayers is that intimate and ongoing relationship with our heavenly Father. This type of relationship gives us the confidence to “Come boldly into the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need,” That is what we are told to do Hebrews 4:16. It is so important to realize that our God is inviting us to come into His throne room where He will freely and willingly pour out His help, mercy and grace. We often hear about God’s throne of judgment, but we need to hear more about His throne of mercy, grace, favor and unlimited help!

The key to answered prayer is knowing God and having that intimate relationship with Him built on the understanding that He is a good, kind and loving Father always willing to hear us and help. He created Adam and Eve for fellowship and He wants the same kind of relationship with us. He wants to walk with us and talk with us. He wants us to be constantly aware of His presence, to receive his love and to express love back to Him.

In J Oswald Sanders’s book Enjoying Intimacy with God; he makes a statement that is both convicting and motivating. He says, “It is we, not God, who determine the degree of intimacy with Him that we enjoy. We are at this moment as close to God as we really choose to be.” Yes, I know that’s a sobering thought – but let’s not get stuck in self-condemnation! Instead let’s be encouraged and motivated to spend more time with the Lord! It is exciting to realize that at any point in our lives we can make a choice to draw closer to the Lord. He is waiting with open arms and listening ears. Let’s be sure that we don’t think of prayer as a duty for which we clock in and clock out, but rather as a privileged appointment with God Almighty.

Look in the Psalms to discover more about the nature of our God and the type of relationship He desires to have with each of us. Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Be delighted with the Lord. Then he will give you all your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him to help you do it, and he will” (TLB). Then again in Psalm 145:18-19 it says “[God] is close to all who call on him sincerely. He fulfills the desires of those who reverence and trust him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them” (TLB). What reassurance! As we purposely make the Lord our first priority, His throne room opens to us, and we come into a place of divine exchange. Let’s take God at His word! Purpose in your heart to press in to Him today and watch the God of miracles do miracles in your life.
